A Letter from Mrs. Barbara Suhrstedt
Master Class Teacher

In March, 2007, my Russian colleague Natalia Voskerchyants and I were visiting the Carolinas and had just helped to adjudicate Southeastern Community College's 29th annual Piano Festival and Competition in Whiteville, North Carolina. We then arrived at the Marion County School For the Arts for several days of Master Classes and a performance.

On the first day, I was introduced to a South Korean student, Junho, who was studying in America that year. Junho seemed to be an average student. He brought a Bach and a Chopin prelude to his lesson with me. The following day I was astonished by the improvement in his playing. He had easily assimilated all my suggestions, not only technical but musical as well. He had not studied the piano for many years, but in the 24 hours since his previous lesson, he had spent more time at the piano than many of my Boston students spent in 24 days!

Over the next few lessons there was a huge leap forward in Junho's technical proficiency at the keyboard. It is gratifying for a teacher to find a student who is serious about his/her goals and who will work hard to achieve them. I left Marion, South Carolina, wishing that I had at least another month to teach this promising student.

(Barbara Suhrstedt is a concert pianist, a master teacher and a sought-after accompanist who lives in Boston, Massachusetts. She recently returned from a 9-day concert tour in Russia, as piano accompanist for the Boston College High School Concert Choir.)

A letter from a Master Class Student

Junho was a foreign exchange student in Marion, South Carolina and a budding pianist. His dream is to become a concert pianist. He is now ready to go to Germany to study music, and he is preparing to become a concert pianist and conductor. He is a very bright young man, who has great promise.

Junho received 3 Master Classes from Mrs. Barbara Suhrstedt, prior to his very first concert at a Victorian Mansion, where he performed, Solo in front of a large audience.

Here is what he has to say about his experience with Mrs. Barbara and the Rosewood Manor Concert Performance:

I can tell that it was a life changing experience for me, that I have met Mrs. Barbara, because I got to make a choice to be a musician. It was quite brief time that I met her, but through that short time of lessons I found such a huge new world. I started to see new things on music, what there are behind the music. I realized the real meaning of studying music. And this probably made me to study music seriously later. What I learned from her was often very basic things, which is the most important.

Many people would ignore it just like I did before. And I learned how certain music can change a certain way, just by thinking about it differently. Truly it would be great if I could learn more with her. But her lessons really helped me to study by myself. And it was such fun.

I still tell people about the influences of these lessons. My first concert in my life was the one at the Rosewood Manor. I had never practiced that hard before. Sometimes I suffered with it. That is when I realized that it can't be but with much pain for one performance.

But all this came to fruition. It is so valuable that I can't ever repeat it. It was also a very good study. Studying a piece of music for a long time, I found very many musical ideas and improved my skills. I felt very successful when the audience showed me their impression with applause after the concert. It is the best feeling at a performance.

There are not many chances that I can stand before and audience feeling like a hero. Because I perform my efforts and practices get it's meaning. I always wish to have my concert again. If you wish to know more about my experiences with Mrs. Barbara and my Master Classes, please just e-mail the Marion County School of Music and they will get in touch with me. It will be the best thing you will ever do.
